International Capacity-Building In Astronomy Education Research (ICAER)

The ICAER project, “International Capacity-Building in Astronomy Education

Research,” is set to run from October 2025 to November 2029. It is funded by a

grant from the Carl Zeiss Foundation. The main goals of the project are:

A. To create a community of astronomy-education-literate volunteers, centered

around the OAE’s National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs).

These volunteers are meant to become competent to support both local and

international-comparative astronomy education research in their respective

countries.

B. With the support of that community, to undertake astronomy education

research across countries and communities that serves to advance the OAE

mission, specifically on

a. student understanding of high-school- and elementary-school-level

astronomical concepts and phenomena, and

b. student attitudes towards the sciences in general and towards

astronomy in particular, to foster our understanding of the role(s) of

astronomy in STEM teaching.

As such, the central elements of the project are capacity-building and research.
