The project ERA-Chair Spectroscopy@IKU: Manipulating and Characterizing Molecular Architectures: from Isolated Molecules to Molecular Crystals is the first project in Türkiye funded by the European Research Agency (ERA) within the scope of the Horizon Europe Framework - Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area (WIDERA) ERA-CHAIRS Programme. The project will be developed during the next 5 years at the Istanbul Kultur University (IKU). The project with 2.5 million euros budget is led by ERA Chair Coordinator and Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Gülce Öğrüç Ildız, while the research team is directed by ERA Chairholder Prof. Dr. Rui Fausto, a globally recognized scientist in his field is supported under the Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area (WIDERA) ERA-Chairs Program. With spectroscopy serving as the unifying factor, a Center of Excellence (IKU-SPECTRA) is being developed to promote research and innovation in the fields of physics, chemistry, and materials sciences. It will be equipped with cutting-edge equipment and specialized human resources. The research to be developed is centered on pharmaceutically relevant materials, and the project focuses on important scientific fields like environmental, atmospheric, and space chemistries as well as materials sciences. In order to investigate the structure and reactivity of atmospheric molecules as well as the polymorphism displayed by molecular crystals—a crucial problem for the pharmaceutical industry—molecular spectroscopy techniques are employed. Cutting-edge computational techniques and a modern laboratory infrastructure support these research endeavors, boosting Istanbul Kultur University's scientific capabilities and global recognition.
