Özet:

In this thesis, the materials used in teaching writing skills to adults in Turkish as a foreign language and English as a foreign language were compared in terms of writing topics and writing skills teaching methods. The case study was carried out with 25 foreign students studying at Istanbul Kultur University, Turkish and Foreign Languages Teaching Application and Research Center. The thesis consists of six chapters: introduction, theoretical framework, book analysis, writing work and data collection, data analysis and conclusions and recommendations.

In the introduction chapter, the research subject, the importance of the study, the purpose of the study, the research questions, the study group, the data collection method and limitations, the contributions of the study to the field, the determination of the research problem and the research method are mentioned.

In the theoretical framework chapter, a brief history of foreign language teaching, the history of teaching English as a foreign language, the history of teaching Turkish as a foreign language, the principles of universality of foreign language teaching, what is writing skill, the importance of writing skill, teaching writing skill, information about teaching writing in English as a foreign language and teaching writing in Turkish as a foreign language teaching were given.

In the book analysis chapter, which is the third part of the thesis, five sets used in teaching English as a foreign language and five sets used only in teaching writing skills and four sets used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language are examined in terms of writing topics, teaching methods and techniques. In line with the numerical data obtained at the end of the research, paragraph and essay writing topics were determined as the most frequently used writing topics and it was tried to reveal whether these two topics were taught better with the methods used in Turkish teaching sets or English teaching sets.

In the fourth chapter of the thesis, titled as writing practice and data gathering process, general information about the study group, pre-training paragraph and essay writing studies, information about how to write paragraphs and essays based on English sources during the training, and general evaluations of data collection are mentioned. The application part of the research was carried out with 25 foreign students studying at Istanbul Kultur University, Turkish and Foreign Languages Teaching Application and Research Center. In the study, data were collected from the students in two stages. These two stages are called “Pre-Training” and “Post-Training”. In the pre-education stage, the students were asked to write paragraphs and essays according to the instructions in the textbooks they were using. At the post-training stage, the students were given training with use of the instructions in the English writing skill teaching books, and then they were asked to write paragraphs and essays on the same subjects again. Besides, a questionnaire was conducted to the students at the end of the writing process before and after the education.

In the fifth chapter, entitled with data analysis of writing studies, the evaluations of the five paragraphs and essays and the questionnaires conducted to the students at the end of each study were given in tables, and the findings were supported by statistics. The data obtained in this section were also evaluated with the SPPS program.

In the last chapter, called conclusion and suggestions, suggestions for general problems in teaching writing skill and specific suggestions for teaching paragraph and essays have been made.
