THE EFFECT OF DIGITAL GAME ADDICTION ON MENTAL HEALTH IN ADOLESCENTS

Özet

Smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, which has brought about addiction. According to United Nations July 2023 data; while the average daily time spent on smartphone around the world is 5 hours 25 minutes, this time is 7 hours 24 minutes in Turkey. The rate of gaming, which is one of the main reasons for internet use in our country, is 36.4%. Phone and digital game addiction, which has negative effects on mental health, is an important public health problem. The purpose of this study; to investigate the effects of digital game addiction on mental health in adolescents. Method: In this literature review study, studies published between 2015 and 2023 were scanned in the Google Scholar between January 1 and January 30, 2024, with the keywords: “adolescent”, “adolescent health”, “digital game addiction” and “mental health”. As a result of the screening, 69 studies were found. 50 of these studies (14 review study, 12 not related to adolescents, 1 not available full text, 15 not related to the effect of game addiction on mental health, 2 not related to game addiction) were excluded. A total of 25 studies were included in the research. Results: In the studies reviewed, game addictions were higher in men. It has been observed that digital game addiction in adolescents causes mental problems such as sleep problems, social anxiety, violence, anxiety, low empathy, aggression, depression, bullying tendency, distraction, social isolation and fatigue. Conclusion: It is extremely important to add awareness and coping training to school curricula regarding game addiction, which has negative effects on the mental health of adolescents. It is recommended that national projects involving the cooperation of the Ministry of Health and Ministry of National Education, and large-sample future studies be carried out on this subject.
