Seismic motions generally cause an increase in the pore water pressure of saturated sand deposits, which then causes a decrease in the effective stress and the shear modulus. The design response spectra specified in the seismic codes are in general based on the shear wave velocities of the subsoil. The variation of the depth of water table is ignored. In this study, an effective stress analysis procedure is used for the determination of surface motion propagating through sand layers having different water table depths from the base rock. Then, the results obtained were used to study the effects of the base motion from different water table depths on the reinforced concrete frames. Both time history analysis and response spectrum analysis is made. © Civil-Comp Press, 2009.
