Abstract

Climate change, sustainable development, and energy transition have become some of the most crucial policy areas in today's world. The increasing share of renewable energy sources in total energy production plays a critical role in environmental sustainability while also having a significant impact on the economic and social development of countries. This study examines the relationship between the share of renewable energy in total energy production and the Human Development Index (HDI) across multiple countries using panel data analysis. Existing literature extensively discusses the effects of renewable energy on economic growth, environmental sustainability, and development. HDI serves as a comprehensive development indicator that goes beyond economic growth by incorporating education, health, and living standards. While renewable energy provides economic and environmental advantages, it is also considered a crucial factor in the long-term development processes of countries. However, empirical studies directly examining the relationship between these two variables using panel data techniques remain limited. This analysis applies panel data analysis to investigate the relationship between the share of renewable energy and the Human Development Index (HDI) across multiple countries.  This study aims to test the hypothesis that the share of renewable energy in total energy production positively influences HDI. Increased use of renewable energy may positively impact human development by promoting environmental sustainability, economic growth, improved health conditions, and expanded educational opportunities. However, given the structural differences and policy variations among countries, the magnitude and direction of the effect may vary. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into how energy policies relate to social development. Investments in renewable energy are expected to support not only environmental sustainability but also human development by improving education, health, and living standards. For policymakers, this study is expected to offer important recommendations on how renewable energy policies can be integrated with economic and social development goals.
