Press today is a branch of large commercial companies and the control of this business is in the hands of a so called autonomous managerial elite who allows a considerable degree of flexibility to columnists. But above all, there is always the shadow of the owner, who is bound to the governments or centers of power based on self-interest, on the managerial staff and columnists. Columnists, contrary to the main line ideology of the newpaper, are allowed freedom to express their opinion and criticize the government, but obviously within reason. As the character of the press changed towards the power oriented branch of a more profit-centered bigger size cartels, a new tppe of columnists filled the arena who were allowed to criticize the government within the reasonable limit of the tolerance the owner allows. We called this new trend of watch keeping over the governments ‘postmodernist fourth power’ of the press. This analysis is made to put forth the degree of criticisim of the columnists. For this purpose all the national newspapers published during the 10th -16th of November, 2005 were examined. One of the main results is that columnists generally adopted the role of postmodernist fourth power.
Basın günümüzde büyük tecimsel şirketlerin bir kolu olmuştur ve bu işletmenin denetimi, köşe yazarlarına uygun bir esneklik olanağı tanıyan sözde özerk yönetici seçkinlerin elindedir. Ancak, bunların ötesinde, hükümetlere ve güç merkezlerine kişisel çıkarlar bağlamında bağımlı olan gazete sahibinin gölgesi yönetici kadro ve köşe yazarlarının üstünden hiç kalkmamaktadır. Köşe yazarlarının, gazetenin temel ideoloisinin aksine de olsa, belirgin makul sınırlar içinde fikirlerini açıklamalarına ve hükümeti eleştirmelerine izin verilir. Basın, giderek kâr merkezli daha büyük kartellerin güç odaklı kolu haline gelirken, basın patronunun tolerans sınırları içinde hükümeti eleştiren yeni tür köşe yazarları alanı doldurmaya başlamıştır. Biz, hükümetler üzerinde gözetim görevi yapan bu yeni akımı basının ‘postmodernist dördüncü gücü’ olarak isimlendirdik. Araştırmanın amacı, gazetelerdeki köşe yazarla-rının değişik konu ve kişilerle eleştiri ya da övgü oranlarını irdeleyerek, köşe yazarlarının ne kadar eleştirel olabildiklerini ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu bağlamda 10-16 Kasım 2005 tarihleri arasında çıkan bütün ulusal gazetelerin köşe yazıları incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın ulaştığı önemli sonuçlardan biri, köşe yazarlarının postmodernist bir ‘4. Kuvvet’ rolü üstlendikleri şeklindedir.
