Özet

Due to the increased population and hence increased number of vehicles, traffic noise has been a major concern in Istanbul. Also, because of the need for harmonizing with the EU regulations, transportation agencies have been looking for ways to reduce the traffic noise levels. Traffic noise arises from powertrain and tire/pavement interaction of vehicles in motion. For vehicles traveling at highway speeds, tire/pavement noise is the dominating noise source. Therefore, altering the pavement surface in order to reduce the traffic noise has been a common method used by transportation agencies. Stone mastic asphalt has been shown to offer noise reduction compared to dense-graded asphalt surfaces. Dense-graded asphalt surface of Highway E-5 in Istanbul was replaced with stone mastic asphalt for a length of 18 km on both directions. This paper presents the pass-by noise measurements before and after SMA surface was placed. Controlled pass-by noise measurements were taken at 40 points on both directions of the highway. Noise reduction up to 10 dB (A) has been observed. Copyright © (2012) by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE).
